Believe it or not, it is over 14 years since the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) demanded that the manufacturers of silicone gel-filled breast implants submit evidence of their safety and effectiveness of their devices in order for these breast implants to remain on the market. In April 1992 the FDA decided that the data that had been submitted was not enough nor sufficient and declined the approval.
The Silicone Gel Breast Implant Lawsuits Began
Lawsuits were filed by thousands of women against the various manufacturers of silicone breast implants. Silicone-gel filled breast implants were first introduced in the early 1960’s. This was the small-breasted woman’s answer. Women could be transformed from a size AA cup to a voluptuous DD.
The Breast Implant Promise Turned To Nightmare
It is now known that silicone breast implants can cause autoimmune symptoms diseases and other illnesses. Silicone is a biologically active and toxic substance and not the non toxic product that the Dow Chemical Company claimed it to be. Silicone breast implants can have a significant effect on the autoimmune system of women recipients. Women were getting autoimmune diseases and these diseases result in the body attacking itself by targeting the woman’s own tissue and organs. The silicone leaked into their body and the immune system was unable to rid itself of the alien substance.
Diseases included: siliconosis, undifferentiated or atypical connective tissue disease, silicone related disease, silicone reactive disorder, silicone disease syndrome, and silicone implant disease (SID). The result was cognitive dysfunction, short-term memory loss, Sjgren’s syndrome (dryness in glands, such as the mouth, kidneys, eyes, and lungs), scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, dermatomyositis, severe joint and muscle pain, incapacitating fatigue, swollen lymph glands, skin problems, peripheral numbness, multiple allergies, headaches, hair loss, sunlight sensitivity, central nervous system disorders (similar to multiple sclerosis), etc.
